They say the best things come in small packages. Ljubljana is one of Europe's smallest capitals, but it's the biggest city in Slovenia. Its size is an asset, though, lending it a delicate and elegant charm that more populated cities couldn't hope to replicate. Like a finely wrought piece of jewelry, Ljubljana is small but perfectly formed.
Ljubljana is home to an impressive assortment of beautiful architecture. Widely considered one of Europe's greenest cities, it's home to several leafy parks and open spaces. The Tromostovje, or Triple Bridge, arches across the river to join the city's modern area with the Old Town. The latter is home to many restaurants and cafes. The dining is top-notch here, and delicious pizza can be had for those who know how to navigate the labyrinth of winding streets. Above the city, on one of two hills, is Ljubljana's castle, which offers scenic views of the town. Destroyed by an earthquake several centuries ago, it makes for an interesting exploration point.
For all its quaintness and charm, Ljubljana is not a boring place. Nowhere is this more evident than in Metelkova City, an old military barracks which is now a cultural meeting point and autonomous social center. Currently squatted by groups like activists and students, it's home to exhibitions, performances, and other activities. There is also a wealth of museums and galleries in Ljubljana, and cultural treasures like Dragon Bridge and the city's Cathedral. A day here can easily be filled just walking or cycling around while enjoying the airy, fresh atmosphere and gazing at the sights.
